Spiritual Energy

Okay, this is kind of out there for most of us…so put on your “imagine this” hat and have a go at imagining an out of this world experience!

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” This saying of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin makes me think about my spiritual energy, how it’s created, how it’s used, and what happens to it after our human experience has come to an end.

Have you ever thought about what might happen to your own spiritual energy when your journey in this physical world has ended? I’ve spent almost 70 years here on earth, and believe me…I’m not ready to make the move yet…but I’m beginning to imagine the landscape of the next world. I’m envisioning my “ideal scene” in the new environment where I believe my spiritual energy will eventually be dwelling.

When we build an earthly home we first give a lot of thought to how we want it to look and feel. We think about the perfect location, the number of rooms and how they’ll be used. We imagine the ease and pleasure of cooking in our well-designed kitchen, or the warmth and joy that will be shared with family and friends around that beautiful fireplace. We dream about our ideal home and then do what we can to see it become a reality. So…why not try to imagine our ideal home in the next world? What have we got to lose?

I don’t believe my spiritual energy just dissolves into thin air, never to be put to good use again. Instead of living in a body with five senses to inform me, and in a home with rooms, windows, and doors, I imagine how my spiritual energy will live…free, and unfettered by physical reality. I imagine an entirely different way of being.

Our Five Senses & Spiritual Connections

Our five senses tell us many things about the physical world we live in, and they can also evoke meaningful feelings and emotions in us, and I believe those feelings and emotions create a part of our spiritual energy.

I smell bacon cooking and I’m a child again…impatiently waiting for the bacon to be done, barely tall enough to peer over the edge of our red Formica kitchen table, quietly watching my Mom at the stove, listening to her sing while she cooks, finally…the delicious taste of bacon in my mouth…and then a feeling of being greatly loved as she wraps her arms around me in one of her joyful bear hugs after breakfast. The feelings and emotions of those sweet moments give me valuable knowledge about life that I’ll always carry, gladly.

On the other hand, our senses also give us unpleasant moments and knowledge that can stay with us throughout our lives, whether we gladly carry it or not. We have all lived through traumatic experiences that affect us deeply and permanently.
I believe that all of our sensual experiences, the good and the not so good, and the knowledge we carry away from them, help to shape our own unique personal spiritual energy.

Once in a great while we all have very special moments when all of our senses, feelings, and emotions are aligned, and our spirit is unquestionably connected to the great flow of the universe.

For me I often have those moments when I’m outdoors hiking in beautiful places, like the Great Smoky Mountains or Sedona, Arizona. My eyes soak up every little bit of worldly splendor, my limbs find their own rhythm, my feet seem to glide over the earth, my heart soars, and my spirit is overwhelmed with a powerful feeling of oneness, peace, harmony, and love.

That powerful feeling of connection, oneness, peace, harmony, and love is the enduring home I imagine for my spiritual energy in the next life. Unfettered by the physical world, wiser and stronger because of my human experience, my unique spiritual energy will flow with the universe, and so will be shared by the universe…that is my “ideal scene”.

What do you imagine for yours?

Moments to treasure…looking into the eyes of loved ones, the sound of laughter, hands touching, hugs, deep belly laughs, spooning, the smell of bacon cooking, the aroma of coffee brewing, the taste of my sweet morning tea, stepping into a cool, green forest, watching birds flit thither and yon, petting a dog, lying with my lover…a tangle of arms and legs, the warmth of the sun on my skin, dancing, walking, just to name a few.
